New page

A '''sesalkeksha''', or '''salke''' ([[Hapšâw'l language]]: sêsâlkêkšâ: twist fastener) is a type of garment fastener commonly used in [[Hapšâw|Hapšâw'l]] attire.

The salke consists of two pegs ending in a wide, flat disc, which are typically made from metal, bone or wood, as well as a long loop of string. One of the pegs is placed on the side of the loop, 1-2cm below it, the other is placed on the other side of the garment, usually located between the heights of the first peg and the loop, which is typically quite long. A variant of the fastener known as a straight salke places both pegs inline, with the loop extending from below one of them.

To button up a salke one first places the loop around the peg on the other side of the garment, it is then twisted and passed around the peg a second time, after which it is looped around the lower peg. In warmer weather it is common to not extend the loop to the third peg, leaving it wrapped twice around the middle peg, intentionally creating a looser fit.

Sets of salke are typically placed in alternating order, i.e. the loop is on the opposite side from the loops neighbouring it.
