haLimiriyil Tokšalêmârâ[1], commonly referred to as Kšalên is a cat which resides in the crew car of the Hapšâw'l Railways M-3 Passenger Train. She is officially employed as the Rat-Hunter of the train, despite sightings of rats on the train being sparse, no other train employs a rat-hunter, human or otherwise. Tokšalêmârâ receives a payment of fish and lard two times a day, though she has received additional compensation in the past.

  1. ↑ literally "Big Eyes, son of Unknown".

Description

Kšalên is a rather large female cat, of quite plump posture. Her coat is dark brown, with black stripes, the fur on her stomach is white. Her namesake large eyes are bright orange. Kŝalên's tail is especially long, roughly 1.2 times as long as the rest of her body. Kšalên is believed to be a cross between a species of imported domestic cat and a Hapšâw'l Plains Wildcat.

Tokšalêmârâ is social and friendly, she is not afraid to approach passengers and may even try to lay down on them during travel. She enjoys being pet and having her ears scratched but is generally not fond of belly rubs or being carried. Kšalên does not enjoy the company of most other animals and will usually try to avoid them.

Life

Tokŝalêmârâ was first discovered on 3-1 82 PC, while still a kitten. She was situated in the rearmost car of the evening train from Goyhalna. Most of the employees believe that she and her mother made their way onto the train while it was in Tokšahalna, after which the mother left to get food for the young cat, and was not able to return before the train departed with Kšalên still on board, who was not noticed until her cries were reported by one of the passengers entering in Bayn. Originally believed to be an escaped pet of one of the passengers, Kŝalên was kept in the crew car, however when it was clear that no one was looking for her she was adopted by the employees of the train. Since then she has been living aboard the train, originally confined to just the employees' car but has since been given access to roam the entire train. She has exited the train on occasion, both accompanied by employees and by herself, but has consistently returned on time.

Kšalên is well liked by passengers of the North Line, with most finding her cute and some even trying to feed her, though this is generally discouraged by the staff, There have been reports of travelers specifically asking to purchase a ticket for the M-3 train, in hopes of seeing her.
