List of rivers of La Rossa

[Toggle Topography]

Listed here are the major rivers and tributaries of the island of La Rossa. The rivers are listed in the table below ordered clockwise, respective to their entry into sea. Notes on their current and historical role as well as the etymology of their names has also been listed for select examples. Throughout most of La Rossa's earliest history, settlements have traditionally sprung up along the banks of rivers, as people shifted from a nomadic towards a sedentary lifestyle. The longest river in La Rossa is the river Lombiera, which springs from underneath Mount Montesuvia and flows to the southern coast of the island, spanning the length of approximately 325 kilometers. The river splits off at the city of Sterino, forming two distributaries that eventually merge together, forming a river island. Both streams of the river are considered to be part of the river, although this leads to differing measurements of length.

No. Name City-province Length Notes
1 Moricio Mineria 86 km The name of the river is the likely etymological root of the name of the town of Morna, located on the island's northern coast. The river Moricio flows into the Strait of the Twin Islands.
2 Forriro Lorma 93 km
3 Ilm Mineria 168 km
(including flow through the Lake of Averno)
The river Ilm was the cradle of the Rossan civilization, with its banks hosting the two oldest cities on the island, Averno and Mineria. In the mountains, the river Ilm flows into the Lake of Averno, a name which according to tradition signified death and toxicity. Although no such harmful phenomena have been scientifically ascribed to the lake, it is believed that the name spread among the nomadic Montagneri of the island as a derogatory insult for those who abandoned the traditional lifestyle in favor of sedentary living.
4 Branca Buglio 101 km
(274 km including Valperno Grande)
The largest distributary of the Valperno river.
5 Valperno Grande Buglio,
Salino
320 km A large river which flows through the Buglian valley, the river and its (dis)tributaries are large part of the reason behind the grasslands' fertility, creating the largest uninterrupted plains of arable land on the island.
6 Valperno Minore Buglio 12 km
(272 km including Valperno Grande)
A small branch-off from the river Valperno, it is distinguished from its larger sibling which continues to flow to the north.
7 Canera Salino 78 km
(until entry into
Valperno Grande)
A tributary which flows into the river Valperno, it is the only river which does not reach sea on its own.
8 Salata Salino 40 km A uniquely salty river that flows down from the mountains above the city of Salino, which has for centuries hosted highly prosperous salt mines. The salty water is not drinkable, however, and freshwater had to be transported to the city from the west through constructed canals.
9 Arre Salino 85 km
10 Fovana Salino 59 km Short river which marks the border between the city-provinces of Salino and Padeno.
11 Lombiera Padeno
Tolia
325 km (west stream)
321 km (east stream)
The longest river in La Rossa, Lombiera splits into two distributaries of approximately equal length that envelop a river island, upon which the town of Sterino was constructed. According to local tradition, the two streams of the Lombiera are not treated as two separate rivers, but are taken as one merely in a tear. This relates to certain Tempestic legends, which describe the mighty river facing a blow dealt by the earth which shattered it apart, but through its unstoppable power coming back together again.
12 Corona Padeno 83 km
(longest stream)
A branching river named the "Crown", it quickly splits off into a wide-cast river delta upon its entry to sea.
13 Nis Padeno 55 km
(197 km including Folero and Lombiera)
Small distributary of the river Folero.
14 Folero Padeno
Tolia
101 km
(181 km including Lombiera)
Marks the boundary between the city-provinces of Padeno and Tolia.
15 Boglia Tolia 96 km A short river leading through the cape of Tolia, it forms a little canyon between the cliffs upon which the city is built.
