Montagneri

The Montagneri, or the Montesuvians, are an ethnic sub-group of the Rossan people primarily characterized by their traditional lifestyle in the Montesuvian mountain range. Living across the formal borders of the Rossan city-provinces, the Montagneri maintain a pastoralist, semi-nomadic lifestyle away from the urban centers. On official government censuses, their religious beliefs tend to be written down as belonging to Tempestry, although the nature of their faith, like on the rest of the island, has shifted following the Calming. Regardless, they continue to uphold a mostly oral tradition passed down between generations.

Although required to attend by law, traditional Montesuvian families often do not send their children to schools (or only do so to the minimum legal extent), and instead maintain a practical form of home-education, usually with the help of their surrounding community, which tend to raise children communally. Due to their remoteness and nomadic style of living, they are rarely prosecuted by the government. They, however, hold no special legally enshrined status, and low formal literacy rates among the community make it a struggle to integrate into larger urban centers.
