It is a common belief throughout the highlands that the end of each year marks the arrival of especially strong malicious spirits. Thus, all children born within the last month of the year must go through special ceremonies to protect them from these spirits, which would otherwise plague them for all their lives. Certain body parts inherently protect people from evil entities most of the year, however children born at the end of the year must have these parts ritually enhanced to protect them from the especially malicious spirits. In most clans, these children are simply tattooed with protective spells on their respective body parts, however ritual varies between the clans. Boys of the --- clan born at the end of the year are circumcised, the foreskin being soaked in a special potion before being dried and hung around his neck. Girls of the --- clan are scarified on their torsos with specific ritual patterns. |
