"Nei tempi di periglio, non scegliere un Miglio" ("In times of peril, don't go with a Miglio") is a Rossan saying describing the historical tendency for Conclaves to select non-threatening Duxes in times of crisis, especially from Families considered to be weaker or less outwardly aggressive. It has usually referred to Morelios and Giannones ascending to the throne following large and bombastic predecessors, frequently with the role of bringing back calm and stability. The accuracy of the advice has been disputed, as historians have argued that certain political crises, like the Barozzo-Miglio Dispute, could have only been resolved by exercises of power, and failed to be defused by moderate figures. While the reign of some of these Duxes lasted for many octades, others would stay in power for only a few years as they failed to deal with the problems of their time. Arguments have been made that the climax of many crises tended to occur during the times of their predecessors, leaving them only with the role of transitioning back to normalcy. Nonetheless, the frequency of the occurrence throughout history, and the idea that weaker Families should be elected to counterbalance strong ones, has led to the adage being invoked at several Conclaves in the past.
