Absolutism, also known as absolutist autocracy, is a form of rule characterized by political power resting in the hands of a single ruler. Although the exact forms and traditions of absolutist governments vary from island to island, they are all characterized by having a single, unchallenged ruler being able to control all aspects of life. It is typical of monarchies and traditional hierarchical structures, as well as military dictatorships. While rulers most commonly take their positions through lines of succession, such as in monarchies, rulers may also be determined through other means, such as through internal votes among the nobility. The powers of absolutist rulers is contrasted with that of constitutional autocracies, where a singular ruler has their power restrained through constitutions or other traditional agreements.
