Elder names

Elder names are names adopted by Elders in their Eldership ceremony to replace their previous civil names.

History

In The First Generation, following a time of turmoil and instability that led to several Elders being assassinated for political reasons, the Elder name practice was conveyed to protect the Eldership. The practice also carries meaning within the Eldership ceremony, which is part of why the practice is popular to this day.

Process

When an Elder is born to a father or mother from and Elder family, they deliberately do not receive a name coinciding the first or last names of their parents. Once their Eldership ceremony take place, they announce their chosen first name and given last name. This is the first time any of the audience meets the Elder.
