Record:On Passports

From Attu Project
Rossan Government Radio record from XX-X 62 PC:

Secretary: Signore Moretti, Advisor Marone is calling you on frequency Lorma.

Dux Moretti: *click* Thank you.

Advisor Marone: There you are. Good evening, Giulio.

Dux Moretti: As I hope it is for you, Advisor Marone. I believe I know why you are calling.

Advisor Marone: I just got the memo, I've been reading through the decree proposal this morning. Are you actually going through with this?

Dux Moretti: If I were not, that copy would not be on your table.

Advisor Marone: *sigh* You are giving in, then?

Dux Moretti: It may not be the most economically feasible option, but... It is preferable to having someone else writing the laws instead.

Advisor Marone: Did Tritone put this forward?

Dux Moretti: I would mind my words, this is not a fully private line. She had a hand in it, yes, but most of it has been assembled by myself and some trusted figures in Isola. Be assured, her influence has been minimized.

Advisor Marone: Look, Giulio, these passports, background examinations, security checkpoints... Some other islands may have them, but we have done perfectly well without.

Dux Moretti: I do think you underestimate the threat you... we are facing, Advisor.

Advisor Marone: Our country is rich, and they've helped make it even richer. Half our factories are staffed with Kalamis and Deysachnis, Okriti stores line the streets, Utlian waiters hand people drinks... We can't do without them, Giulio.

Dux Moretti: That is precisely the issue. As far as they are concerned, at least. They do not care to share the nation's wealth. In their eyes, it is the work and property solely of the Rossan people.

Advisor Marone: And what, are we to buy into those convictions? Should a man have his opportunities taken away from him purely due to his island of origin? This democracy was built upon this land, and has allowed all of its flowers to bloom, no matter where they came from.

Dux Moretti: That will still happen, Advisor. All that this will do is make it so less of them come here in the first place. Page 13, I believe it is Article 7.

Advisor Marone: (mumbling) "All adult residents of the island that have been recording as living on the island in the 61 PC census or can otherwise prove at least four years of residence at the time of its passage will be granted unconditional creation renewal of their passports and entry to the nation in perpetuity."

Dux Moretti: It is the least destructive solution I have thought of. Immigration will undoubtedly slow, but the people already here will stay.

Advisor Marone: It still isn't right. Maybe our embassies and offices around the HoL may issue passports. But we are effectively closing the doors on such a great part of the world. Where should a Ronatanan get a passport? Or even a Hapshawl?

Dux Moretti: You know this as well as I do, Advisor, the image of internationalism has long been poisoned. If we can make it slightly less so, it will do more for this nation than a principled stance ever will.

Advisor Marone: I hope you understand why I will have to vote against this.

Dux Moretti: I do, Advisor Marone, I really do. But as things seem at this moment, the decree is set to pass.
