The Bees (Tanospy: Bys) is the collective designation for a massive subterranean fungal network located in the Serene Union of Spyron. The network is estimated to stretch across 50,000 to 100,000 km² of land and extend to an average depth of [6 meters] below topsoil. The lowest recorded depth achieved by The Bees is [24 meters] below the surface. It is not known whether the Bees is fully continuous.

Ecology

The Bees is a mycelial fungal colony which derives its nutrients from the soil. These nutrients have been demonstrated to be produced by the decomposition of living matter. The Bees releases a substance or substances into the soil during its absorption of nutrients, which has been demonstrated to improve soil quality and arability. The most productive farmland in Spyron is located on patches of land containing the Bees. Only a small portion of the Bees Network is visible above the surface, but locations with a high Bees concentration can generally be distinguished by an abundance of small, cream-white mushrooms. These mushrooms are edible, if bland.

Industrialization has caused severe damage to some patches of the Bees on an ecological scale, resulting in markedly lower crop yields and plant growth in surrounding areas. Scientific papers have been published advocating for "saving the Bees", which have proved somewhat successful in sparking conservation efforts.
