Orena-Ut is the largest city in Utlia with a population of 700 thousand. The city is located along the Sreer river in southern Mountange.

Etymology

The name Orena comes from a popular Frish children's story, Orenawy Iru Neruk Attu, in which Orena is the name given to a far off land of extreme wealth and beauty. When Explorer and cartographer Lyrem Iwest discovered the land that the city of Orena-Ut would eventually inhabit, he wrote of it in his journal "It is among the most wondrous views one could ever see, the river and mountains framed perfectly from my campsites entrance, I am in awe every morning I wake here and I dread having to continue northwest." Lyrem then proclaimed Orena as the sites name and his camps shack is considered the first building in Orena.

History

Prehistory

Prior to the advent of permanent civilization, the Mertek nomadic tribe inhabited the Orena area, likely subsisting off of fish and crab from the Sreer river, the only writing of the people being collected in "Records of A Great Empire" an 1802 TT atlas and encyclopedia of the Frish Kingdom, in which it is said that "The Meyrtek north of the kingdom prefer to be left alone, living and moving along river-lines, they have great proficiency for skinning and gutting, with little care for things such as trade." The Mertek carried large pots on their back, which historians now believe were for storing fish and possibly preserving it, as evidence by steynka residue found in the pots. The Mertek tribe is believed to have died out due to a series of avalanches combined with Frish overfishing in the sreer river.

Early settlement

The first inhabitants of Orena belonged to an expedition headed by Frish explorer Lyrem Iwest in 1627 TT, during this expedition Iwest would name the land Orena and construct the first buildings on the site. Following the temporary habitation by the Iwest expedition, Orena was left untouched by the Frish, as it was technically still unclaimed by any powers. In 1432 several prominent merchant routes to the Eutan kingdom began to take a path along the eastern side of the Sreer river, the abandoned Iwest expedition camp, almost exactly two days of pack-brenya travel away from Unlaunen, provided an ideal place for travelers to stop for the night.

Orena would become a minor trading post and rest stop along the route, though it would remain small and its lack of governance made it a hotspot of crime. This rise in crime led to the near-abandonment of Orena trading post around 1383 TT.

In 1266 TT, an intense snowstorm destroyed much of the unmaintained buildings in Orena.

Unified Utlia rule

Orena-Ut officially became part of the Unified Kingdom of Utlia, during the Azztan annexations, when the island as a whole came under ethnic Utlian rule. According to a 1080 TT survey of Utlia conducted by the Shote noble family, Orena-Ut had a population of 93, mostly traders, caravan guards, and soldiers.

In 635 TT, The first Merriyem uprising began, originally seen as a clear Utlian victory by its supporters, the war had turned to Mersen front taking offensive countermeasures, Orena and its surrounding land became major battlegrounds on the edge of Mersenite controlled land. Tonnel Aremt ordered a fortress be built, and on Yenso 23 of 634 TT, it was finished. On Yenso 30, A Mersenite attack came in from the north, the fortifications had been a surprise to the Merriyem soldiers and despite attempts to breach the walls, no progress was made, the attackers faced heavy casualties against the Aremt defensive forces, leading to a Mersenite retreat. A second battle occured on Aracet 3 and while Mersenites had access to siege weaponry such as battering rams and catapults, once breaching the walls they were encircled by a royal army Lyet coming from behind, the trapped Mersenite troops were slaughtered in the fortress courtyard. At the end of the first uprising, Tonnel would revisit the rather large and expansive castle, declaring it his lifes accomplishment.

The region did not see any action in the much shorter second Merriyem uprising and the castle became the defining feature of the village during the Aremt dynasty. The castle itself was used actively as a garrison and training base until 563 TT.

Mining boom

Between 240 TT and 80 TT, inner Mountange became the center of a massive mining boom, The Utlian Industrial Age had started and Orena was the perfect place for mining guilds and budding entrepreneurs to congregate, an existing town situated in the middle of a mountain range, with stable land to build on. On Yenso 32 (4-2 HC) 223 TT, local steel mill owner and steel guild member Lyreman Myren began petitioning to the Terent family, who had the rights to most of Mountange, for proper city designation so that Orena-Ut could have a municipal governance, as opposed to its then town-provincial ruling. Myren was a respected member of the community and a major player in the steel industry, the Terents decided to hear him out on account of his influence but he would be kicked out of the Terent local Wyckryn by matriarch Dyeki for "rude and disrespectful behavior." This did not deter Myren or his supporters, who upon hearing the news of his expelling, started the first riot in Orenas history. During the riot, the Terent Steel Oversight office was firebombed and a number of Terent owned buildings were ransacked and vandalized. Fifteen were executed publicly in the trials that followed, with an additional six, including the fire bomber being sent to Mesyetet for Yekajyu. A second riot started the week after the last trial but was quickly stamped out. To quell the unrest in Orena, a duel was ordered between Nyetka Terent (Dueling record 22-0) and Lyreman Myren (No known record of dueling). The duel was scheduled for Nuriit 3 (3-1) 221 TT, in the time before the duel, it was assumed to be a death sentence for Myren, as he was a somewhat large and unfit man and Nyetka had the highest dueling record in Utlia and was a cyals athelete. The duel was conducted in a Terent amphitheater built specifically for dueling in rural Mountange. A large crowd attended the duel, in which the two men would only fire one shot, Nyetka would fire and miss, Myrens shot hit, landing in the leg. Historians believe Nyetka could have survived but the Terent code disallows recieiving medical attention after any kind of honor loss.

On Aracet 5 (5-5 HC) 230 TT, the city was given a formal designation as a city

In the 210 TT Shote survey (Formally conducted by Lowsie due to the murder of Akryet Shote) Orena had a permanent Utlian population of 45,000 though contemporary estimates of Merriyem citizens put the true total at around 56,000.

Post-calm

The construction of Utlian Unity Tower in the city was completed on 14-11 8 PC.

Geography

Orena is known across Utlia for being dense with skyscrapers and towers, the city uniquely has a number of large radio towers scattered across its districts, giving the city a high number of independent and local radio stations. The city itself is situated in the Mozyey range of south-central Mountange, near the border with Azznin
