Hupi Na Ne (Maichun: Twenty and Five) or just Hupi is a traditional Kalami board game.

History

Hupi and its variants show evidence of being played for hundreds of years. The earliest evidence of its existence is in game pieces carved out of bone which may date back nearly 2000 thousand years.

Gameplay

Players

Hupi can be played with a minimum of 2 players. Matches with more players typically have a kind of referee; Someone who keeps count of player's scores, bets, steps and to shuffle the sets.

Board

Hupi boards are a track divided into 40 consecutive sections plus an additional 5 sections dyed a distinctive color, usually black. Each player is assigned a player piece which starts at the very first section or "step" on the board. The goal of the game is to reach the closest step to the 40th step without going over the black tiles.

Sets

Hupi has three "sets". Each set is a stack of cards or tokens which the players must draw from in order. The first set corresponds to the initial amount of paces the player may move across the board from, ranging from one to twenty. The second set decides by how much the result of the first token drawn is divided by (the result being rounded to the nearest whole number), ranging from one to five. The third, sometimes optional set to be drawn upon decides how much the current amount of sets will be multiplied by, ranging from one to ten.
