Kingless Period

From Attu Project

The Kingless Period was a period in Tokšahalnal history marked by the lack of a single ruling figure. It is defined as the time between Rumnkoke's death in 370 TT and The monarchist revolt led by Ksero in 340 TT. The Kingless Period is further divided into the reigns of the first and second councils of Tokšahalna (370-358 TT and 358-353 TT respectively) and the fragmented period which followed them, lasting until the end of the Kingless Period. During the fragmented period the population of Tokšahalna would dwindle, hitting it's lowest point of 522 people, roughly ⅓ of it's population at the time of Rumnkoke's death.

Background

In 378 TT the wealthy landowner Rumnkoke, whose father is not known, would organize an uprising against the reigning king of Tokšahalna - Wten'l Mêtâl, motivated by Mêtâls perceived unfair treatment of landowners, such as raising taxes for them while lowering those of guilds, and granting serfs certain privileges. Rumnkoke would lead the landowners and their armies to the palace, where they would storm the buidling and capture the king, who would later be executed by Rumnkoke, who would later declare himself to be king.

Rumnkoke's son - Rumnkokel Volley was only four years old at the time of Rumnkokes passing, as such, when Rumnkoke realized that he would not be able to take power after his death he created the Council of Tokšahalna, a governing body made up of 5 of his most trusted allies among the landowners, who would split the lands between each other but would rule the city proper together, only passing new laws and decrees by way of vote. This system was meant to be temporary, Rumnkoke believed the council members would give up their powers to Volley after he became old enough to rule.

First Council

The first council consisted of 5 aldermen, who ruled the town together, they were, from north to south. Each had power over a roughly equal fragment of the lands surrounding Tokšahalna, but the urban city center was shared, new laws only being passed by a majority vote. The lesser landowners were subservient to the aldermen who ruled their land. This system would last until 358 TT, when Volley reached the age of 16 and demanded the city, and the lands surrounding it be handed over to him. This demand was not followed by the aldermen, however they did award Volley with a seat on the council, granting him control over urban Tokšahalna and ending the condominium.

Second Council

tba but basically one of the aldermen dies and a crisis of succession implodes the council because his neighbors grab his shit while his son claims it.

Fragmented Period

tba - every alderman gets a military and they keep exchanging land, volley gets killed at one point and toksha is kinda ruled by gangs and loose affiliations. a lot of land shuffling around basically

Ksero's Uprising

Dakaral Ksero was heir to a minor landowner when the first council was established, his father, both a landowner and the leader of the Tanners' Guild would oppose Rumnkoke's rise to power, for which he would be killed during his reign. Ksero would become one of the minor landowners during the first and second councils, and would rule a small piece of Tokšahalna, consisting of his family's land and a piece of urban Tokšahalna during the larger part of the fragmented period. In 344 TT he, along with allied gangs and the forces of Mêmây'l Wnka would begin the four year campaign to take control of all of the city center, which would be followed by Ksero declaring himself to be the next king of Tokšahalna.
