A rain catcher (Maichun: Kinaka hine) is a rainwater storage system invented in Kalam.
Design
The rain catcher consists of a bottle shaped stone plate over a large hole in the ground, also stone cladded. The plate with a hole in the center would let the rainwater fall into the containment space, or the "vault" of the rain catcher below for storage.
Use
Rain catchers see wide use in Kalam to this day due to the nature of its weather. Kalam has a rainy season and a dry season, so it's crucial for farmers specially to stock up on water during the rainy if there are no sources of water nearby, such as dry plains where houses having their own individual rain catchers is common. After collecting enough water trough the rainy season (sometimes even collecting extra water to pour directly into the vault) it could be extracted trough a bucket and a pole or a more sophisticated siphoning system if possible.
