Veryek-Ut is a city in the Utlian province of Mountange, it is a regional city in the province and acts as a hub for scientific research in Utlia. Veryek is the location where the telescope was first invented in Utlia and the highest elevation settlement on the island, located in a river valley between Mt. Utlia and Mt. Sreer. During the Utlian invention age, the city experienced a population boom, the University of Veryek was founded in 570 TT as a scientific university. The city has a population of 32,479.

History

In 631 the first buildings in the city were constructed out of lumber, a series of lodges and information offices for tourists hiking the Sebret Mountain Range, which Veryek-Ut is located inside of. In 576 TT, shortly after the start of the Utlian age of invention, scientists and academics began moving into the area and various research organizations were founded, including the Syet-Hajl Research Committee.

At the start of the second Merriyem uprising in 578 TT, the city was designed as a strategic center for the Royal Army due to its location and proximity to Merriyem lands; prominent battles occurred in the city, such as the Utlian-won battles of Ubetsker and Sreer. Lyremeren Aremt considered the city his second home away from Tinlea, spending most of his time there after becoming Utyr, he was captured and eventually executed in the city by Mersen front as well.

The University of Veryek-Ut was founded in 570 and became a major center for research, with the most advanced laboratories on the island at the time being located within the campus. The Veryek Observatory is also built on the campus and ran by the university.

On 3-9 432 TT, Veryek-Ut suffered from a devastating avalanche coming down from nearby Mt. Basrek, the disaster destroyed residential and commercial buildings, with at-least 30 confirmed dead and 12 missing.

On 27-10 5 PC the first Syet-pryen cells were discovered by Veryek University biologist Hauspyn Lewett.

Geography

Veryek is located in the slopes of northwestern Mountange, it is the highest elevation city on the island of Utlia, it is located in a narrow valley between Mt. Utlia and Mt. Sreer, along the Sreer river.

Demographics

Veryeks population skews heavily toward educated Utlians of adult age. The city also has a sizeable Merriyem community consisting of around 20% of the general population.

Culture

Veryek in contemporary Utlia takes great pride in its academic importance and scientific history, as well as its geographic location.

The festival of stars, occurs on 1 Uyrin (1-11 Haracalnde) and sees a large number of tourists, mostly from Orena-Ut come for an unimpeded look at the night sky, the local shrines hold feasts in celebration of the unknown cosmos, where Azzta is believed to originate from.

Outside of Veryek, the city is stereotyped as a cold and uninviting city where esoteric work is done. This has been popularized by media such as the science fiction doreonya Its In The Stars, I See It!.

The unetsk school of philosophy was founded by Suret Unetsk during his time as a professor at the University of Veryek, this school remains niche in contemporary Utlian pop culture but is commonly taught in philosophy courses across the island.

The Peserl Bureau is headquarter in Veryek, as it is the largest urban center near the ice lakes the Peserl championships are held at every year.

Economy

Historically the economy of Veryek has been consistently dominated by research and education, the University of Veryek is the largest employer by a wide margin.
