Physiological differences in ethnicities
More actions
The different ethnicities of the humans of the Attu Archipelago present many differences. This page aims to list them comprehensively.
Overview
Facial features
By island
Akaria
Hair
Hair colour ranges from brown to black and greys with age.
Skin
Akarians have a light green skin tone due to the chlorophyl in said skin. They go brown when they die.
Old age
Akarians of advanced age typically develop brownish spots on their skin which grow in size and number each year. Their skin also gradually becomes browner. By the time brown spots cover the body, most Akarians have lost between 10 and 25 percent of their body weight due to shriveling.
Caseic Archipelago
Facial Features
Main article: Caseic Nose
The Caseic nose is a distinctive facial feature common among people of the Caseic Archipelago, in which the nose is very small and flat.
Skin
Skin tone varies throughout the Caseic Archipelago, with people in the south generally having lighter skin than those in the north.
Deysachin
Facial features
Deysachni faces generally are longer than they are wide, and are disposed to features better described as angular than round. Deysachni noses especially are far more likely to be sharp than flat. Eye colors range from pale yellow to dark burgundy, with green-blue shades most common. Deysachni eyes are typically large and wide, and commonly both round and narrow, giving an expression sometimes derogatorily refered to as "tired" or "sultry".
Hair
Hair colors among the Deysachni average out towards brown, but can go from jet black to mildly red, and can on occasion be so light as to be nearly blond, though true blondness is not found. In some cultures, it is not uncommon for the color of one's hair to be naturally "enhanced" with certain long-lasting compounds, giving the impression of much more vibrant hair. Deysachni hair is thick, ranging from straight to curled, and often grows long.
Skin
Deysachni come in an extremely wide range of skin tones, from dark, near black Thuoa, to pale, nearly grey Birminghambi. On everage, they can be described to have "olive" or "tan" tones, tending towards paler tints overall, with varying degrees of tint. The color of tint can range from a redish yellow to nearly a vague green shade.
Among the Modhes, it has been known for individuals of high rank and holiness to gain abnormal and inhuman features. Descendants of Modhes Ywl have been known to have unusually vibrant eyes and hair, sharper than average canines and fingernails, taller than average height, on rarer occasion extra digits or some skeletal defromation, and rare still a wholey nonhuman feature, such as a pharyngeal jaw, though most reported circumstances of such things are dubious. Such traits have also been reported among the preisthood in general due to beliefs about "pure blood", and are even said to have been aquired over time by especially pious individuals, most of Saints. It is unclear the degree to which historical descriptions of these abnorations are ment to be literal or metaphorical, though it was noted that the late Mbiel The Blind verifiably had an extra row of teeth and unusually fast reflexes for an old man.
Archpriests, due to having consumed the ashes of their predeccessors who took part in Metamorphosis, have been seen to possess more exaggerated abnorations, such as fanlike hands, perminantly miscolored sclera, sharpened teeth and clawlike digits, a subdermal anomaly described as a buried third eye, and on very rare occasions, a true third eye (described thrice), hornlike protrusions (described four times), four extra fingers (described twice), and a whole additional arm (described once).
Eternal Apostles are seen to be the pinacle of this phenominon, as they no longer are to be considered even human.
Hapšâw
Facial features
Hapšâw'l faces are typically wider and the features are usually more angular. The noses have a narrow base. Eyes range from teal-blue to green and olive to mustard and dark yellow, they do not display epicanthic folds. Two horns protrude from the forehead at an upward angle, they are longer (15-20cm) in men then in women (10-15cm).
Hair
The hair of Hapšâw'l people is almost always black, although grey hair can appear, caused by old age or pigment deficiency. Hapšâw'l hair ranges from tight coils to s curls (4a-4b). It is typically parted into braids or dreadlocks, and is sometimes straightened by means of a straightening iron. Laborers and poorer people typically keep their hair short and not parted.
Skin
Hapšâw'l skin is green with a slight mint hue. It darkens from prolonged sun exposure. Moles and melasma are relatively common among the population.
Dzeyyal Hapšâw'l
The Dzeyyal look similar to the bayn'l Hapšâw'l in most respects, however their skin is noticeably more yellowish, resulting in an olive hue. The horns of the Dzeyyal are on average shorter than those of urban Hapšâw'l, and are visibly ribbed, in contrast to the smooth horns of urban Hapšâw'l and Fishermen.
Kalam
Facial features
Kalami people are most often defined by their bushy eyebrows with sharp ends along with broad, bulbous noses. Likely their most striking feature at first glance, Kalami eyes appear x-shaped due to a strange deformation pattern in their pupils, akin to coloboma, though wholly unexplained.
Hair
Under natural circumstances, Kalami people will always have black hair, though it can range from thick and short to thin and long. Kalami people tend to style their hair depending on gender, with men either tying their hair in several tails or shaving it into a short military style.
Skin
Kalami people have skin tones ranging from a dark and rich chestnut color to a brighter yet colorful beige.
Many Kalami make use of scarification on their flesh as a symbol of their warrior status or religious devotion. Tattoos are commonplace, with special facial tattoos used to identify important government officials such as Elders and Kimal.
La Rossa
Facial features
Rossan features are varied across the island. Most Rossans have longer, angular faces, though population differences persist. Rounder faces with plumper cheeks are especially characteristic of the north and west coasts of the island. Rossans also tend to have larger noses and usually dark eyes.
Hair
Rossan hair is usually black or dark brown, although differences exist across the island. While rare, red hair is spread across the southern coast, though it has appeared elsewhere, and lighter shades of brown have been observed across the island. A condition running in the Minestrici Family sees the early loss of pigmentation of hair among many of its male members, with men as young as thirty occasionally developing a fully grey head of hair.
Skin
Most Rossans are of a somewhat swarthy, olive skin complexion. Although the center of the island is covered in frozen peaks of Montesuvia, most of the population has historically lived by the warmer coastline. Although the Storm forbade sunlight on many days, the strong sun during better days gave the island population a tanned appearance. Rossans tend to have pronounced rosy cheeks.
Tietero
Facial features
Tieterans typically have high cheekbones and pointed ears. They possess minimal facial hair; adult men may sport a mustache at most, but this is generally uncommon.
Hair
Tieteran hair typically ranges from deep brown to black in color. Both men and women generally prefer to keep their hair cut short. Although combing hair is common to remove tangles, extensive styling is uncommon, often resulting in a somewhat messy appearance.
Skin
Tieterans tend to have an rich, olive complexion. Much of this can be linked to the coastal climate and fair weather, allowing people to spend significant time outside throughout the year.
Hands
A unique physiological feature of Tieterans is their six fingers per hand. However, it is customary to amputate the fifth finger beyond the first joint on their non-dominant hand once they are an adult. This practice leaves most adults with a total of only eleven fingers.
T'vaqi
Facial features
T'vaqi are characterized by their somewhat wide, angular faces.
Hair
Hair color for island residents is a uniform dark gray from birth, slowly whitening as one ages. Short, coily hair is ubiquitous for those in central T'vaqi, while loose, longer hair is more common along the coastline. A significant portion of the population is affected by hair loss.
Skin
T'vaqi have varying shades of gray skin. This is due to the Storm's strong presence in the island pre-Calming blocking out the sun. Most individuals possess heraldry tattoos on their foreheads, typically combinations of geometric shapes, which identify the family they come from. Different shapes surrounding the tattoo signify higher importance in the government.
Utlia
Facial features
Within Utlian people, the most common facial archetypes include round faces, upturned noses, somewhat large eyes and thick eyebrows.
Hair
Utlian people have black and brown hair, with brown hair being slightly more common than black. Hair color also depends on the region of Utlia itself, in the northern provinces brown hair is more prevalent as opposed to black hairs prominence in the south. Like many things in Utlian culture, hairstyles are not typically associated with a specific gender.
Skin
Utlian skin is lighter with a pale or rosy tone to it, Merriyem skin however featured tealish or light blue tinting throughout, this is theorized to be from the large amount of Grylbo meat consumed by their ancestors. Within Utlia tattoos are not uncommon, among sailors in the amphibious forces or soldiers in the national forces tattoos are a rite of passage as they rank up.
