Sekereye

Sekereye, born Sererk, is the Telan god of sleep and dreams, he was born a mortal, the failure middle child of a noble family, he went comatose after eating a rare berry from the swamp realm of Kausk. The divine nature of the berry also removed any divine barriers, allowing him to sleepwalk right into Meret in the woods east of Tela.

Biography

Born in the northern Kelna city-state, Sererk was the middle child of a nobleman involved in trade, Sererk was sent to Tela to oversee trade between the two citystates, he was eventually made to resign after a fire caused by his negligence claimed 5 lives.

Appearence

Sekereye was often portrayed as a stereotype of northern "backwater" peoples, with short brown hair, brown eyes, pale complexion and a small nose. In depictions of his deity form he gains gray roots in his hair and a tome said to contain the dream world in his left hand. He wears northern clothing including a large urlafur coat and well insulated trousers.

Personality

Sekereye is well meaning but ignorant of Telan culture, leading to problems during his interactions with both mortals and deities, he is shown as a friend to Owoekausk and Oklep, he is highly respected by Bunersket for his apotheosis. Despite initial hatred towards him, Leiyen considers him to be her potential lover, he is ignorant to this. He is shown to be cruel to those he deems worthy of cruelty, such as soldiers in the Telan army.

Mythology

The Book of Near Death is a religious novel about Sekereye and how he became a god, it opens with this line:

"When the comatose son of a noble called Sererk sleepwalked into the realm of Meret without a godly sponsor, he was deported back to his mansion by the coast, the second time he sleepwalked into Meret he was imprisoned for 4 hours before promptly disappearance, the third time he sleepwalked into Meret he achieved apotheosis"

The Kausk berry guided him to Meret while he sleepwalked, the first two times he visited the realm he dissipated when he woke up, during the third visit he was confronted by a number of Meretis gods, all demanding an explanation, he woke up but did not vanish back to his home, he gained full consciousness and in a bout of panic and fear, stabbed the heart of Aberesk, the pet hound of Leiyen with a sharp rock, the stabbing should not have done anything since Sererk was a mortal but in this case the dog fell into an endless coma itself, the gods imprisoned the Eutan man while they held a vote on what to do, Leiyen strongly supported execution for the man, for both transgression against the divine and being a mortal in Meret. At the same time, the god Ensoeur wanted to keep him around Meret but forbid him from returning to the mortal world. After a long session of bickering and argument the gods returned to his cell only to find him gone. A search was started and eventually Sererk was found, sleepwalking and drinking directly out of the fountain of Resket, a small waterfall in a grotto located on the outskirts of Kausk, it should have poisoned him fatally but he drank close to a gallon without a sign of any negative effects, instead, the waterfall seemed to react to the indigestible berry in his stomach, finalizing the young mans apotheosis. The vote was thrown out and he was made an official Mereite by Bunersket, as the only person to achieve Apotheosis in history.

Sekereye controls sleep, making sure every person sleeps and wakes up, he often works with Oklep when the latter ends slumbering lives. Sekereye also controls dreams and nightmares, notably in the story of Nerokra, in which he shows prophetic images to a paralyzed footsoldier.
