Syetin, officially the Syetin-Leshert project is an under development weapon, vehicle and piece of military technology in the Republic of Utlia. The projects goal is to develop giant walking tanks called Syetin. The Syetin and its associated project was initially developed by Areen Leshen in 52 PC, who after having funding refused, decided to have the first models built in secret. The first prototype development plan is nicknamed Project Urla.
Etymology
The name Syetin comes from the Eutan word for chaos, Syertet, and the Frish word for ambush, Tinlet. Syetin could also be a reference to the Merriyem deity of fire named Syereskatet, though it is unlikely considering Areen Leshen having a general lack of knowledge on the Mersenite people.
History
In the early 50s PC Areen Leshen began developing an idea for what he at first called a "meat machine" to make difficult tasks in factories and warehouses easier. In 51 PC the ideas scope changed to military use in light of the Niueyjar-HoL war he and began work on a new variant of his idea. In mid 52 PC he presented the idea to the COUR Innovation Committee and was rejected on account of cost and because of safety concerns regarding both the pilot and the creatures sourced in production. Feeling that he needed to prove himself to the new presidential administration he chose to assemble a team of military engineers and builders, beggining work on the prototype, Project Urla at a facility in Wynlia just days after being rejected.
Einru war
During the Einru war, prototype Ur-A was deployed to break the stalemate at Unlaunen, after the city was secured by Einru forces it made its way to Tinlea-Ut, where it caused extensive destruction before being recaptured and returned to a hanger by its field crew.
Description and mechanics
Urla class
The plans for the Urla class Syetin describe them as between 3.5 and 5stories tall, covered in thick plating, the electronics and cockpit are powered by two uranium core cylinders on the back of the machine, they have large heads that begin as a rectangle before narrowing into a mouth similar to that of an Utlian Cryceidel, the mouth itself has two rows of sharp teeth. The cockpit of the Syetin is in the neck, while the head features the Urla brain and core nervous system.
Syneri class
In 55 PC three new Syetin were commissioned for the National Army to construct as part of the new Syneri class, based off of the syneri as opposed to the prototype Urla, this is due to hopes that the syneri system would be less aggressive and easier to control.
Biological component
While pitched as and described internally as machines, the syetin are really closer to half alive, controlled variants of animals, the armor and machinery is mostly for electronics and control, the creature itself is powered by a brain, heart and nervous system taken from the system class namesake creature and implanted in the flesh machinery of a syetin, this is an incredibly dangerous procedure and is very susceptible to failure according to the initial design schematics from Areen Leshen.
The actual power source or procedure used to bring the Syetin to life is secretive, with very few people involved in the development understanding or having knowledge of it. The initial plans written by Areen describe a "Meyheko" heart located in the central chest.
Piloting
Piloting the syetin is done in the cockpit, located in the neck. Selecting and finding suitable pilots is incredibly difficult as they have to fit into the cramped space, undergo extensive training, and then be accepted by the brain of the syetin. The criteria to being accepted or rejected by the Urla brain is unknown due to the experimental nature of the project and its clandestine operation. Pilots are not expendable either as once an operator has been accepted, they are connected to the brain and cannot be severed from this connection. In the initial proposal from Leshen piloting is nearly entirely glossed over in favor of talking up the properties of the syetin itself.
Support crew
To optimize performance in the field, there is a team of mounted radio-equipped scouts sent along with the Syetin, to assist both the pilot and weapon itself; they provide intel to both the syetin and the base of operations. They do not carry rifles or most standard Utlian military gear, instead opting for just a sidearm, usually a Hyeko semi-automatic pistol. While usually on horseback it is not uncommon for Brenya to be used as preferred mounts for their durability and weight capacity.
Design
Each unit has a paint scheme unique to it to aid with differentiating them in the field, UR-A featured a maroon paintjob with a white stripe down the center of the creature-machine, each unit also features painted on flags for every place the individual unit has been deployed, as of 66 PC only UR-A has any flags, an Utlian flag for its use in the second civil war.
Use
While initially designed for industrial work, the syetin project was pivoted to military use early in its development. Specifically they are designed for the destruction of enemy infrastructure and a way to push stalled frontlines, the prototype is meant to be versatile and adapt well to changing battlefields.
