Ash Moth

The Ash Moth (Vo'qa Shinpat) is a large species of moth endemic to T'vaqi. The Ash Moth is notable for being mainland T'vaqi's only remaining native animal species.

Description

The Ash Moth is defined by its characteristic ashen wings, with a mottled gray texture and occasional black spots. Individuals possess short, fuzzy antennae and legs. These traits are shared by both male and female moths. Male specimens have an average wingspan of 9.07 paqoni (12.7 cm), while females possess larger wingspans of up to 10 paqoni (14 cm). Since 50 TT, the average male wingspan has decreased by approximately 0.29 qoni (0.1 cm) each decade, and the average female wingspan by 0.34 qoni (0.12 cm).

The gray coloration of an Ash Moth's wings developed as a result of industrialization and the subsequent abundance of soot and ash across the island. In addition to cloud cover from the Storm obscuring most sunlight, pollution from machinery provided a reproductive advantage to individuals that were more easily able to blend in with their environment.

Individuals subsist on a diet of nectar and sap, tending to prefer native Naqha flowers as a food source.

Conservation

In 99 TT, the Ash Moth became T'vaqi's only surviving native animal species following the extinction of the Amanala. This designation incited environmental protests nationwide, calling for restrictions on machinery and the conservation of native plants and animals. While very few restrictions on industrialization were placed, the Ash Moth was officially declared a protected species months later. "Moth Gardens," government-sponsored sanctuaries which serve as zoological attractions and a means of preserving the species, have been established in several cities.

Following official contact with other islands in 53 PC, the potential danger of an invasive species driving the Ash Moth to extinction became a concern. As a result, it became illegal to import or export any foreign flora or fauna.

In culture

The Ash Moth is a symbol of cultural pride in T'vaqi for its distinctive appearance and uniqueness to the island. The High Institute of the Sciences features an Ash Moth on its emblem. Riri, a type of gummy candy manufactured by the Qoqo company, is shaped to resemble various animals, including the Ash Moth.

It is common for students to capture and keep an Ash Moth the night before Examination Day for good luck.
