Modhes in T'vaqi

From Attu Project

Modhes in T'vaqi constitute a significant portion of the population of the Nation of T'vaqi. The term encompasses any resident of the island who subscribes to the Modhes faith or its constituent ideology, including both Modhes immigrants and T'vaqi converts.

History

Early attempts by Deysachni missionaries to convert the populace of T'vaqi to Modhes were largely unsuccessful, succeeding only in creating the Modhesian Army, a terrorist group which would proceed to kill Grand Magister Sirra Voti. T'vaqi relations with Deysachin declined afterwards, especially during Modhes Millitaria's land invasion of T'vaqi in the Tricade War.

Modhes in T'vaqi were granted religious freedom and legal recognition in 69 PC as part of a bill passed by Grand Magister Piqo Thipoqo. The bill was made as part of the Lambent Concordat, the treaty that ended the Tricade War. Newly-converted Modhes began flocking to the town of Viqho after the bill was passed, since the settlement had been ceded entirely to Deysachin.

Differences in faith

As with any international sect of Modhes, there are several differences in how the faith is practiced in T'vaqi. The most apparent of these differences is that most Modhes converts in T'vaqi are not religious (or do not identify as such). In a 77 PC public survey, 30% of self-identified Modhes reported having taken part in any form of religious ritual (including prayer), and only 11% reported doing so regularly. Non-religious Modhes in T'vaqi subscribe to the faith purely for ideological reasons, which may include general opposition to the T'vaqi state.

Among religious converts, there are unique ideas which have emerged, such as the standardization of the Saintly Name.[1] In T'vaqi Modhes, Saintly Names must be agreed upon by one who has already earned theirs, and cannot be granted until two bearers of Saintly Names agree they have been earned. Saintly Names that have not yet been earned are preceded by (daq'), meaning is of.

T'vaqi Modhes has controversial notions of reincarnation. In the mid-80s PC, an idea called Free Reincarnation became popular among converts; Free Reincarnation states that one's actions in life do not affect reincarnation, and the only things that do are the times of one's birth and death. This abolishes the idea of a Gwprum hell. Free Reincarnation was dubbed heresy and a falsehood by Mahant Kguncu'i Achofza and High Priest Anwu Ptandr.

Anti-Modhes sentiment

Due to the often-strained relations between T'vaqi and Deysachin, a negative societal attitude has been placed on the Modhes faith. Many citizens hold a disdain for the religion, and several politicians (including Havo T'l) are openly anti-Modhes. The No-brain movement is notable for its extreme prejudice against the faith; numerous instances of anti-Modhes violence are attributed to juvenile delinquent No-brains.

  1. ↑ Among Modhes converts, a Saintly Name is a new name taken when one makes sufficient demonstrations of faith, often styled after a Modhes Saint. Saintly Names are not enforced by Modhes Temple.
