Saintly Name

From Attu Project

Among Modhes converts in Attu, a Saintly Name is a name which is earned through demonstrations of faith. Once earned, the owner of the Saintly Name abandons their old name. The criteria for earning a Saintly Name vary greatly among different sects of converts, since the concept of a Saintly Name is not enforced by Modhes Temple. The tradition arose only after multiple honored converts adopted Saintly Names, inspiring others to follow suit.

Form

A Saintly Name is usually written in Standard Deysachni script. The name itself is often taken from a Modhes Saint or other important figure, but may also be a transliteration of the owner's previous name. The owner of a Saintly Name chooses the name for themselves.

  • Saint Ragi Noza is sometimes referred to as Nz'raja, what would become the surname of her descendants.

Nongba

  • Tlheun'h Kushiar, the first non-Deysachni to become Modhes. Tlheun'h is commonly held as the origin of the Saintly Name, abandoning his old name as a symbolic abandonment of his old life. It is not known for certain what his original name was.
