Added "GNU" to acronyms because people other than Penguin use it and I think that common use of a term should denote it being noted

The Greater Nayela Union (G.N.U. or GNU) is a federation in the Caseic Archipelago, and used to be the largest state of the Caseic Federation. It is itself a federation of five states: Abayea, Bainachia, Brenjia, East Nayela, and West Nayela. Its capital is Framaja-Nayela, a city shared between the states of West and East Nayela. Its most populous and prosperous city is Brenji, in Brenjia, which is the main port of the trade between coal and Hydrochloric acid.

History

Pre-Calming

The Greater Nayela Union was formed in (Caseic Calendar: 469), when Abayea, Bainachia, Brenjia, and the Second Nayela Union agreed to unite to form a federation. The Second Nayela Union was split into West Nayela and East Nayela along the Nayela River, due to concerns of too much power being centralised in the Second Nayela Union, and concerns that having four constituent countries would lead to tied votes. This lead to the concept of pentarchy: it became a norm for the G.N.U. to have five rulers at a time.

Independence movement

During the Caseic Blackout, Framjist rebels began openly supporting G.N.U. independence.

Independence referendum

In 27 PC, there was a referendum on whether the G.N.U. should become independent from the Caseic Federation. The referendum passed by the margin of a single vote.

Government

The Greater Nayela Union is officially governed by a pentarchy, meaning that there need to be five rulers. Before the G.N.U. gained independence in 27 PC, those rulers were the monarchs of West Nayela and East Nayela, and the presidents of Abayea, Brenjia, and Bainachia. After Brenjia left the G.N.U. to become a protectorate and later a province of Utlia, Esiga became a part of the G.N.U. to maintain pentarchy. After Esiga left in the 40s PC, the G.N.U. chose the mayor of Framaja-Nayela as a temporary fifth ruler with limited power. Seven years later, amidst concerns that too much power was centred in the capital city, the mayor was ousted from the pentarchy and replaced with a coin.
